A desperate father. A lonely ranger. Unexpected love that can't be denied.

Jason Kellerman's life revolves around his eight-year-old daughter. Teenage curiosity with his best friend led to Maggie's birth, her mother tragically dying soon after. Insistent on raising his daughter himself, he was disowned by his wealthy family and has worked tirelessly to support Maggie--even bringing her west on a dream vacation. Only twenty-five, Jason hasn't had time to even think about romance. So the last thing he expects is to question his sexuality after meeting an undeniably attractive park ranger.

Ben Hettler's stuck. He loves working in the wild under Montana's big sky, but at forty-one, his love life is non-existent, his ex-boyfriend just married and adopted, and Ben's own dream of fatherhood feels impossibly out of reach. He's attracted to Jason, but what's the point? Besides the age difference and skittish Jason's lack of experience, they live thousands of miles apart. Ben wants more than a meaningless fling.

Then a hunted criminal takes Maggie hostage, throwing Jason and Ben together in a desperate and dangerous search through endless miles of mountain forest. If they rescue Maggie against all odds, can they build a new family together and find a place to call home?

Road to the Sun
is a May-December gay romance from Keira Andrews featuring adventure, angst, coming out, sexual discovery, and of course a happy ending.

Road to the Sun Keira Andrews Books

This was a very good read, well written with a satisfying happily ever after ending. It does feel like I worked hard for that HEA—Jason is a character with as many deep flaws as extraordinary strengths, and for most of the book we're either battling through his fears and demons alongside him, or suffering through the pain and fallout of Maggie's kidnapping. None of those are problematic per se, just a change of pace from the lighter books I usually enjoy. Ben is older, solid, dependable, and an all-around great guy; the perfect antithesis to Jason's jumpy, doesn't-trust-anyone, feels-the-need-to-constantly-prove-himself-and-thus-push-people-away character.

Then there was that sex scene, and I don't mean that in a good way. I love good sexy times, and the books I tend to read don't hold back, but I had a huge problem with Jason and Ben's first time. First of all, because of all the obstacles between Jason & Ben from the start, including Jason's unawareness that he's gay and then his daughter's abduction, the first steamy scene only happens about halfway through the book. My problem with it was that Jason is all swept up in the emotions of the moment, so they go from dancing around their attraction, to him taking it in the butt willingly. That did not feel realistic, sorry, especially for an almost virgin that has only ever had bumbling sex one time, six years prior, with a girl. It would have been better if they didn't jump straight into sex (especially with Jason as the bottom), but rather had them starting off with frottage, or a BJ from Ben, or something more *introductory*. Especially since the next scene has Jason doing what he does best: running away and thus creating a large gap as far as more sexy times were concerned. That made me feel like the author just brought out the big guns and went all out in that middle scene as a way to make up for the lack of action in the rest of the book. I liked the slow burn of attraction between them, the discovery and slow realisation of Jason's sexuality, the innocence. That sex scene spoilt it for me. This is the main reason I gave the book 4 stars, because if you don't mind a character who overthink things and generally get in his own way (but in the end learn and grow), this book could easily have gotten 5 stars.

Road to the Sun Keira Andrews Books Reviews

4.5-5 stars

This was a great story! I just loved Jason and Ben (and Maggie) and got completely sucked in by their story.

Jason is a single father that works in a factory and dreams of art school. Jason was 17 when he experimented with his best friend and she got pregnant. They decided to keep the baby and Jason was part of that but when the mother died when Maggie was only 6 months old, Jason became a single father. Jason's family is rich but they were shamed by his situation and, thinking they knew best, took Jason to court to try to take Maggie away forcefully. Jason felt he had no choice and so he cut ties with them and has been taking care of Maggie on his own for 8 years now.

Ben is a park ranger at Glacier National Park. He's lived in the area since birth and knows the area like the back of his hand. Ben was involved with another ranger, Brad, for most of his adult life and they fought for acceptance in the park services and achieved it. Unfortunately, their long relationship ended when Brad cheated on Ben and then left him. Now Ben is lonely and kind of unhappy but not sure where to go from here.

Maggie is a very smart and curious 8 year old that loves nature. She collects rocks and watches nature shows and her big dream was a trip to Glacier National Park. Jason scrimped and saved and managed to get enough money together to take Maggie on her dream trip, even if he's not much on camping himself. Jason has spent the last 8 years focusing on raising Maggie and had little time for anything else, especially dating. Since he never really thought about relationships, Jason didn't realize his "appreciation" for hot guys was really something more. When Jason and Maggie go on one of the guided tours and meet Ben, the attraction between the men is immediate and confusing for Jason. Regardless, Jason finds he likes talking to Ben and Ben is patient and kind to Maggie so he's pleased when they keep seeing Ben around the park.

Ben is totally interested in Jason but doesn't realize just how inexperienced Jason is. Ben switches some scheduling around so he can be around Jason and Maggie more and he and Jason awkwardly make friends. They're out on a trail that's isolated but also leads to a great view when the fugitive crosses their path and takes Maggie hostage. It's a very intense time and although it's dangerous, Jason has to go after Maggie and Ben helps him. Let's just say that things are tough but Ben, Jason and Maggie all get out of it alright (if rather emotionally bruised). The feelings between Jason and Ben are strong but Jason also has to struggle to deal with the idea of giving up enough control to get involved with Ben seriously. And then there's also the issue of them living across the country from each other. Thankfully, Jason and Ben do manage to get past their mutual issues and have a reunion that turns into the start of a well deserved HEA.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. I really liked Jason. He had some freak out moments but considering what he was dealing with, I think he can get a pass due to brain overload. Ben was strong and sweet and wonderful with Maggie. Maggie was a pretty cool kid character as well. I really liked seeing the interaction between her and Jason and Ben. This story was great and very engaging, once I started it I had trouble putting it down and when I did put it down for sleep, I actually had trouble sleeping because I was thinking about how the story might progress from where I'd left off. Overall, I was very pleased with this story and its character and would recommend it. D
I have learned through a lot of hard reading that a story from Keira Andrews is as simple as boy meets boy, falls in love and they live happily ever after. However the trials and tribulations that Ms. Andrews makes them live through for their HEA can be legendary and they are in this book. Maybe it's because I have quite a few friends who have a more than 10 year difference in their ages that the 16 year difference doesn't really qualify as May-December to me, but the innocence vs. experienced does fit the bill, so guess it can be so. Then she throws in the single parent, deranged criminal, love at first sight, kidnapping, white-water rafting, suddenly realizing that you are gay and have been since puberty, estrangement from parents, estrangement from previous lover, the cookie factory (yum), and the forest ranger uniform (double yum) - it was a challenge to fit them all in and still have it all make sense! But Ms. Andrews does so in her own unique way and does so fabulously! Try it - you'll like it!
